Microdosing THC: A Beginner’s Guide to 5mg Drops

Microdosing – the practice of taking a sub-perceptible dose of a substance for sustained low-level effects without impairment – moved from psychedelics into cannabis around 2022, and by 2026 it’s a real wellness category. The data on it is interesting: studies out of Colorado and Oregon (small samples, but consistent) suggest sub-5mg THC doses can lift mood and creativity without measurable cognitive impairment.

If you’ve heard about microdosing and wondered if it’s for you, here’s the beginner’s guide. What it actually is, why 5mg is the sweet spot, how to find your dose, and the products that make it doable.

What microdosing THC actually means

A microdose is a dose so small you don’t feel “high” in the traditional sense, but you do feel a subtle shift – usually some combination of:

  • Slightly elevated mood
  • Mildly more creative or open
  • Reduced low-grade anxiety
  • Slightly less physical tension

You’re not impaired. You can drive, work, parent, do all the normal things. You’re just running a slightly happier baseline.

Why 5mg is the sweet spot

The numbers vary person to person, but the rough framework most cannabis professionals use:

  • 1-2.5mg: True microdose. Often subperceptible – you don’t notice it consciously, but you may notice you’re in a slightly better mood three hours later.
  • 5mg: “Threshold dose.” Most people start to notice something subtle. This is the standard starting point recommended by every legitimate cannabis brand.

How to find your dose

The cleanest approach over a 2-week period:

  1. Day 1-3: Take 5mg in the morning, no other day’s dose. Note how you feel at hour 1, hour 3, hour 6.
  2. Day 4-6: Take 2.5mg (cut a 5mg drop in half) in the morning. Compare.
  3. Day 7-9: Take 5mg in the morning and 5mg around 2pm. Note how the second dose interacts.
  4. Day 10-14: Settle on the dose and pattern that produced the best subjective experience.

Most people land at either “5mg in the morning, period” or “2.5mg twice a day.” A handful of people prefer “5mg every other day.”

What microdosing isn’t

To set expectations correctly:

  • It’s not a cure for anxiety. If you have a clinical anxiety disorder, talk to a doctor. Microdosing can be a complementary habit but it’s not a replacement for actual treatment.
  • It’s not a productivity hack. The “creativity bump” is real but small. Don’t expect 10x output – expect a 5% better mood while you do the work.
  • It’s not for everyone. About 10-20% of people don’t respond to sub-threshold doses, or actively dislike the feeling. That’s fine.
  • It’s not a daily forever thing. Cannabis tolerance builds. Most thoughtful microdosers cycle – five days on, two days off, or take periodic week-long breaks to reset.
